NEW for 2025! The XTERRA Malta Aquathlon brings together open-water swimming and trail running in a race that is ideal for athletes who enjoy getting outdoors and taking on the challenge of off-road sports, without the mountain bike segment.
An Aquathlon is a multisport race combining a swim followed immediately by a run, with athletes competing for the fastest overall time, including the transition between the swim and the run. Aquathlon emerged from triathlon and similar races in the late 20th century. Governed by the International Triathlon Union, it shares triathlon’s distances but omits cycling, with annual world championships held.
Unlike SwimRun events, Aquathlons feature just one swim and one run segment. The swim is unaided by hand paddles or swimbuoys and is completed without shoes. Wetsuits may be worn during the swim as well as the event swim cap given to each athlete.
The XTERRA Malta Aquathlon will include a 1.5km swim followed by an 11km trail run, along the same route as the Cross Triathlon. Participants will transition close to the Bike Transition, in a designated space.
The Aquathlon will start at 10:30am on Saturday the 12th of April 2025.
The Aquathlon is an inaugural event and will include a participation medal, teeshirt, and an overall top 3 podium for Males and Females. There will be no podiums for Age Group winners, however all participants will be listed in the final results by Age Group.
